Oost-Mediterrane smaken al 100 jaar verpakt in Miras

Op een grote lange tafel, in een klein dorp tussen de Eufraat en Tigris, heeft een toegewijde moeder allemaal gerechten zorgvuldig uitgestald in schaaltjes. De smaak is uniek want alles komt vers van het land en is samengebracht dankzij de best bewaarde recepten.

1920

Origins: Turkey, land in the sun

In a small town, the Aslan brothers made a delicious helva. They were known for this sweet sesame nougat. But they did so much more for the locals. The region supplied olives, grains, fruits and vegetables, which they used for tomato and paprika purees. They also dried herbs and spices, nuts and fruit. From wheat flour they baked fresh bread and the cattle that grazed there supplied milk and meat.

The brothers married and had children, after which they both decided to open their own grocery store in one of the shopping streets. One of the older sons, Ibrahim, worked for his father for many years. He took care of the purchase of goods supplied by the local farmers. He bought household and other products that were not available locally from large surrounding cities such as Diyarbakir, Mardin and Gaziantep. He also travelled to modern Istanbul and Izmir. More and more customers came from far and wide and the shop became a great success. The building where the shop was run is still there.

1968-1985

Curious journey into the world

Son Ibrahim married a butcher's daughter and became a father. The curiosity about the world was so great that he decided to discover Europe. He left his homeland with his family and built a new life, just like other migrants at the time.

His wife, who also loved Eastern Mediterranean cuisine, was cooking for neighbours and friends. Although the house was small, the long table took pride of place in the living room. Just as their parents had taught them, there were always different bowls with the most delicious dishes. Yet, the characteristic flavour was missing because of the lack of essential spices and products that made the dishes so unique. Ibrahim and his wife longed for specific nuts and delicacies from their region of origin. This nostalgic feeling made him decide to persue his dream.

In 1985, he founded a company in Europe with which he opened a trade route with his father in Turkey. Ibrahim sought out all his contacts and suppliers in Turkey again, allowing him to also offer the products from the Eastern Mediterranean region in Europe!

His company became a great success. Migrants in Europe could now buy their familiar products and ingredients close to home. That saved them problematic excess kilos in their luggage on return from their holidays.

2000-2020

The great success

Ibrahim’s children know the way to the Eastern Mediterranean region as well. Because they often accompanied their father on his travels to the local farmers and the suppliers from way back, their knowledge and interest in the beautiful products grew. They loved the flavour and tasted everything on offer, which instilled the passion for the kitchen and its ingredients at a young age. The picking garden has been extended to Anatolia, Syria, Iraq and part of the Balkans. The ingredients form the basis of the Anatolian and Turkish cuisine. But European cooking also beckons.

The products and spices are now for sale throughout Europe. The company has grown into an international company with an extensive range of products. Despite its growth, the love for flavour was never lost. In 2000, the brand Miras was founded. It means “inheritance” and is therefore a wonderful tribute to its history.
